Mathematics Competitions

In India various Mathematics Competitions are organised to discover and encourage students who have the capacity for original and creative thinking, readiness to attack unfamiliar and non-routine problems exhibiting a general mathematical ability appropriate to their level.

1. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

This Olympiad is for students of class VIII, IX, X and XI only.  The 6-member Indian team for the IMO is selected through a three-step procedure.

1. Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (pre-RMO or PMO) : State level preliminary exam organised by state level organizations
2. Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) / Group Mathematical Olympiad (GMO) : State level exam, organised by state coordinators or Central Board of Secondary Education, leading to participation in next level.
3. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) : The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) is one of the major initiatives undertaken by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), a unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India to spot and nurture mathematical talent among young students who can participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Every year the test is organized by Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of NBHM, which leads to participation of Indian students in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Various training sessions are also organised at various levels.

2. National Mathematics Talent Contests (NMTC)

This is conducted by Association of Mathematics Teachers of India, Chennai. Every candidate (except the senior level) has to take a Preliminary Test. This is organised at various levels:

Primary Level       –          Gauss Contest            for  V and VI Standard students

Sub Junior Level   –          Kaprekar Contest       for VII and VIII Standard students

Junior Level          –          Bhaskara  Contest       for IX and X Standard students

Inter Level            –         Ramanujan Contest      for XI and XII Standard students

Senior Level         –           Aryabhata Contest      for Arts, Science & Technical College students

 

3. Bhaskaracharya Mathematics Talent Search Competition

Any student up to 6th standard in Maharashtra & Goa can compete and take the examination at the centres announced. The registration for the examination is to be done through the student’s school.

4. Madhava Mathematics Competition (MMC)

This is a National level Mathematics Competition for Undergraduate Students, organised by S. P. College, Pune and TIFR, Mumbai [Funded by National Board of Higher Mathematics].

The competition is basically meant for the Second Year B. Sc. / Second Year B. Sc. (Computer Science) students with Mathematics as one of the subjects. However, interested students of First Year B. Sc. and Third Year B. Sc. (Mathematics) may also appear.The merit list of Third Year B. Sc. students is made separately.
